The futuristic museum that looks like it’s from a galaxy far, far away now has an opening date.
The starship-like lucas museum of narrative art in los angeles, a $1 billion passion project by star wars Creator George Lucas and his wife Melody Hobson will open to the public on September 22, 2026.
First unveiled in 2014, Exposition Park looks set to become a must-see and bucket-list attraction judging by the photos.
According to Mod Architects, the studio behind the building, the structure is designed to float above the ground, and there is no right angle in sight.
The 300,000-square-foot building is set in a landscape of trees, gardens and walking paths, and what is said to be “one of the most important collections of narrative art in the world” is maintained by the 81-year-old Lucas himself.
Dedicated to visual storytelling, the five-story museum will house more than 10,000 pieces from his personal collection, including comics, illustrations, paintings, photographs, motion pictures, sculptures and film memorabilia.
In this exhibition, the works of illustrators such as Norman Rockwell, NC Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish and Kadir Nelson will be displayed. Comic artists such as Winsor McCay, Frank Frazetta, Jack Kirby and Robert Crumb. Mural painters such as Judith F. Baca and Diego Rivera. Photographers including Dorothea Lange and Carrie Mae Weems. African American chroniclers including Jacob Lawrence and Charles White. and featured works by artists including Frida Kahlo, Artemisia Gentileschi and Robert Colescott.
The collection also includes film archives, including individual cinema archives and the entire Lucasfilm Historical Archive (1971–2012).
The interior will include gallery spaces, two cinemas, including a 299-seat theater, glass elevators, a library, a cafe and restaurant. Visitors can also climb to the rooftop terrace for panoramic views of the city.
Hobson, co-founder of the Lucas Museum, said: “This is a folk art museum – the pictures are pictures of the beliefs we live by every day. Because of this, this art belongs to everyone.”
“Our hope is that as people move through the galleries, they reflect on themselves and their humanity.”
