A man has been accused of racially abusing football player Antoine Semeneu during a Premier League match.
Mark Maughan, 47, from Liverpool, has been charged with section 5 racist public order against the Bournemouth forward.
Merseyside Police said the incident happened during Liverpool’s match against Bournemouth on August 15.
Maughan, of Templehill Close, Dovecot, has been released on bail and will appear at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on December 22.
Merseyside Police said in a statement: “We can confirm that a Liverpool man has been charged in connection with an incident during a Liverpool FC match at Anfield in August.
Semenio reported that he was racially abused by a spectator during the first game of the Premier League season.
Referee Anthony Taylor stopped the match in the 29th minute and a man was sent off at Anfield.
Semeneu, 25, scored twice in the second half to bring Bournemouth back from two goals down at Anfield as Liverpool eventually won 4-2.
A Liverpool FC spokesman said in August that it was aware of the allegations of racist abuse and that “we condemn racism and discrimination in any form, it has no place in society or football”.
The Football Association said it was “concerned” about allegations of racism against Semyon and would ensure “appropriate action” was taken.
