Reports indicate that the suspect who killed at least 10 people and injured dozens more after plowing a car into a crowd in New Orleans has died.
The FBI is investigating what happened around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday when a vehicle drove into a crowd on New Orleans’ famous Bourbon Street in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Police said the suspect, who has not been identified, acted in a “very deliberate manner.” Law enforcement officials told The Associated Press that the suspected driver was killed after a standoff with police. Two officers were shot at the exchange and are now in stable condition.
FBI Assistant Special Agent Alethea Duncan said authorities are investigating the discovery of at least one suspected IED at the scene.
Witness reports recall a speeding truck plowing into the crowd before the driver got out and started firing a gun, and police returned fire, CBS reported.
A video circulating online that appears to show the aftermath of the incident shows several people lying on the ground as people flee the area.
One person who said they witnessed the incident described it on social media as “the scariest thing I’ve ever seen”.
