Editorial: America – and Donald Trump – have much to learn from the life and service of Jimmy Carter

“The contrast between the peanut farmer and the mogul couldn’t be more different, as the United States celebrates the passing of its most humble president — and prepares for the return of its most divisive.”

Carter’s presidency was full of turmoil

Carter was full of ambition at the beginning of his presidency, but he was faced with problems from the beginning.

The presidency was affected by many crises. In the 1970s, the economy struggled with a rare combination of simultaneous inflation and recession, oil shortages drove up gas prices, and the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, derailing negotiations for a major arms treaty.

Notably, in a fight that lasted almost as long as his presidency, Carter fought over an energy plan that was structured to make fuel expensive enough to encourage consumers to conserve it.

This crisis caused Carter to address the nation several times in 1979.

“To control the price, production and distribution of energy, the federal bureaucracy and red tape has become so complex it is almost unbelievable. “Energy prices are high, and they’re going to go up, no matter what we do.” He said in a speech in April 1979.

Jimmy Carter made the eradication of Guinea worm disease a major mission

Nobel Prize-winning peacemaker Jimmy Carter spent nearly four decades fighting to eradicate an ancient parasite that infected the world’s poorest people.

Guinea worm disease, which is rarely fatal but very painful and debilitating, affects people who drink water contaminated with the larvae, which develop inside the body into 3-foot-long worms. Then the thin, noodle-sized parasites make their way out and break the skin in burning blisters.

Carter made the eradication of Guinea worm the primary mission of the Carter Center, the nonprofit organization he and his wife, Rosalyn Carter, founded after leaving the White House. The former president brought together public health experts, billionaire donors, African heads of state and thousands of volunteer villagers to try to eradicate a human disease for the second time in history.

However, the Carter administration achieved a diplomatic success, which could have been recognized without what happened next. This success was achieved with the Camp David Agreement, which was signed in September 1978. “This is a third of the way into his term and a first-rate diplomatic development.”

Carter often volunteered with Habitat for Humanity after leaving the White House

He was the oldest living president and had been out of the White House for more than 35 years, but Jimmy Carter never stopped trying to improve the lives of others—most of which involved building homes.

Even into her 90s, Carter wore a hard hat and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, the nonprofit she often worked with through the Carter Center.

The one-term president — who died Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia — worked alongside 103,000 volunteers in 14 countries to build, rebuild and repair 4,331 homes with Habitat for Humanity for more than 35 years. Often, Carter and his late wife, former first lady Rosalyn Carter, volunteered together.

The couple first participated in a Habitat for Humanity project in New York City in 1984. Carter discovered the organization while on the run. He recalled passing a building and thinking, “Rosalyn and I should come and help them.”

“Once we left the White House, we could do anything,” Carter once said. “But we chose to volunteer as Habitat workers and it was a life-changing experience for us.”

Carter insisted that there be no train funeral

Carter specifically requested that his body not be taken by train from Washington, D.C., to Georgia, once telling a staff member, “If you take my cold, dead body across the United States by train, I will see you until the day you die.” I will follow.”

In the past, some presidents have traveled by train from Washington, D.C. to their resting place, allowing people across the United States to pay their respects. George HW Bush’s family did this in 2018.

But Cutter believed that was not the case with him The New York Times. Instead, his body will be transported by military flight.

Every time Jimmy Carter flew Delta, he shook hands with every person on board. Because that’s what he was. Someone who treated people like people.” Delta wrote
