British Athletics and its former head of sport have been charged with manslaughter over the death of a Paralympic athlete who was hit in the head by a metal bar during training in 2017.
Abdullah Hayai, 36, who was representing the United Arab Emirates, was injured and pronounced dead at the scene on July 11, 2017, at Newham Leisure Centre, east London.
On Wednesday, police and the Crown Prosecution Service announced that 2017 Paralympic World Athletics Director of Sport Keith Davies, 77, of Bushwood, Leytonstone, had been charged with grossly negligent homicide and a health and safety offence. is
UK Athletics Limited, the national governing body for athletics, has also been charged with corporate manslaughter and a health and safety breach.
The incident occurred after a metal cage fell on Mr. Hayai while he was training for the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London.
Malcolm McHaffey, head of the CPS Special Crimes Unit, said: “The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that criminal proceedings are ongoing and that both UK Athletics Ltd and Davies are entitled to a fair trial.
“It is extremely important that there is no reporting, interpretation or sharing of information online that in any way harms this process.”
British Athletics and Davies are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on January 31.
