A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a woman, believed to be a hospital nurse, was seriously injured after being stabbed in the A&E department at Royal Oldham Hospital.
Greater Manchester Police said officers were called to Rochdale Road, Oldham, at 11.30pm on Saturday following reports of a stabbing.
The force added: It is believed that one of the people attacked a member of staff at the Royal Oldham Hospital with a bladed device or a sharp tool that was not a knife.
This woman, who is around 50 years old, has suffered severe injuries that are likely to change her life and is hospitalized for treatment.
According to the police, a 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody.
The force said it is not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident and does not believe there is a threat to the public.
Detective Sergeant Craig Rothers, from the Oldham area, said: “This is a serious incident which has left a woman in a critical condition.
“Our thoughts are with his family and colleagues and we will continue to support them throughout this investigation.
“The local community can expect an increased police presence while investigations are carried out, but they are also on hand to provide reassurance and answer any questions you may have.
