How to spend a five -day holiday on the Faro Islands beautifully isolated

“Please, sir, we like to keep your lawn alive. If you can stay on the road.” A tourist had walked over a grassland, above the small village of Boeur to get a complete photo of the stacks of the magnificent sea at the time.

Tourist returned to the road and rescued the grass. The place was waving, smiling and riding. Life continued. It was a moment when we besieged us for five days on the Faro Islands. The Algerian Assembly, located between Iceland, Norway, and Scotland, seemed so remote that it was like stuttering ancient mystery.

Although it is only a two -hour flight from London, these 18 volcanic islands are a secret for most British homes.

Farrow Box

It rains about 300 days a year

Location: Halfway between Scotland and Iceland

Population: 55000

The total area of the land: 1,399km2 (540 square miles)

The weather: On average 3 degrees to 11 ° C, winter and summer

Language: Faroussi and Danish

Currency: Krona Faroesee (DKK)

Time: Gmt (winter); GMT+1 (Summer)

However, this anonymity is at risk of fading. Given that orthorism is in Europe’s mainland, the Danish checkpoint is holding a number of visitors’ records.

But for now, on the edge of the rock with the wind around you, the Faro Islands still feel like the end of the earth.

A map of Farrow Islands:

Exploring a car -free area is almost impossible: the Algerian Assembly is connected by a 23 tunnel network, four of which are implemented under the sea. This is an engineering that is currently in the dream of repetition.

This is a country that is not easy to connect to make it easy for tourism. This is about keeping people roots in a place where tradition, family, and ocean are pivotal for everyday life. Some islands have only 30 residents in total.

Only a short drive of Boeur One of the most spectacular Faros photography points: Muffosur Waterfall. It takes 20 minutes to reach the airport, but standing there feels a hidden gem.

There is no bustle for the full Salafi, no Tiktok star is hoping for its next viral video without the souvenir booth they sell. Your only real concerns here are to eliminate camera memory and stroll into sheep drops.

On a trip, our taxi driver Magnus, a happy place of Torshavn, summarized it. “You still know everyone here,” he said with a shrinkage. “You go to the city, you see a familiar face, chat, then walk for thirty seconds and meet another,” he said.

“We’re not close anywhere. We welcome visitors – it keeps me busy but it’s not too busy. I’m glad.”

Despite Magnus’s self -esteem, these islands are not at risk of over -blind visitors. In 2019, the government began its “closed maintenance” plan and turned off the most popular sites every April, except for “volunteers” that help repair sidewalks and protect fragile landscapes.

How long this delicate balance – in 540 square miles of wild Atlantic land – is still seen.

For five days, we settled ourselves in the capital, Torshavn, and only 14,000 joined the population.

Life here is very traditional, rooted in fishing, agriculture and more controversial, seasonal whale and dolphins hunting. But modernity in a cozy Torshavn cafe, we met Alex, a happy British who moved here to play in professional handball.

He told us, “I completely love it.” “You see the same faces every day, but when everyone is so friendly, that’s not a bad thing.”

And handball life? “Honestly, like that Love Island“She laughed.” All the rumors know each other. This is a very small world. “For his team the longest day is a 45 -minute drive.

Beyond the natural beauty and national love of handball, the Farra Islands have just as distinct from their landscapes. Since 1948, he has worked as an autonomous realm in the Kingdom of Denmark. This parliament has its own – The Loeegting – and its own language.

Talking about complete independence has appeared over the years, especially as Greenland – another Danish territory – has been internationally regarded by Donald Trump. But here, such ambitions look off.

“We’re happy”, one of the places asked about the complete breaking prospect. “Why do we want to change all this?”

Currently, the Faro Islands are a diamond left of a rest: Finding Great for anyone looking for a few days of beaten.
