Rob Baxter says no decision has been made on Emmanuel Faye-Wabusou’s shoulder surgery

Exeter’s Rob Baxter says a decision has yet to be made on whether England winger Emmanuel Faye Wabuso will undergo shoulder surgery.

Feyi-Waboso dislocated his shoulder while playing for Exeter just before Christmas.

England’s opening Six Nations game against Ireland takes place on February 1 and the 22-year-old will miss the entire tournament, given his recovery time from the operation is 10-12 weeks.

Exeter’s director of rugby Baxter confirmed the British and Irish Lions hope has been booked in for an operation next week, although Feyi-Waboso could avoid the surgical route and focus on rehabilitation instead.

Andy Farrell is taking the Lions to Australia this summer, with the Six Nations flagship storefront. Feyi-Waboso has spearheaded one of the back three ranks due to his impact since his Test debut last year.

Feyi-Waboso is among several England players to receive an enhanced elite squad contract, with England now responsible for all medical and sports science issues affecting them under a new eight-year professional games partnership between the Football Association. “I think it’s definitely happening faster (before),” Baxter said of that new process.

We had things booked, we were ready to go, we were preparing decisions that would be made a week in advance. The process you have to go through now has certainly slowed things down.

“That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s wrong, but it certainly slows things down.

“Until that surgery is done, he’s still going to be hard at work rehabilitating his shoulder.

“That will ultimately decide whether the operation is done or if Manny feels he’s gotten himself to a point where the rehab is going well enough not to do the operation.

It is now an ongoing process involving Mani, our medical team and the English medical team. It’s there, booked to happen, but he’s not actually on the operating table yet.

He won’t be fit to start the Six Nations – zero chance.

He’s really just starting his rehab process, because whether he has surgery or goes to rehab will probably slow down both options – surgery or rehab.

Feyi-Waboso is one of England’s most dangerous players, having scored 5 times in 8 matches and could be an automatic Six Nations selection if fit.

“There’s a lot going on, isn’t there? “You’ve got a young man getting England recognition for the first time, he had a breakthrough season in the Premier League last year, there’s a Lions tour at the end of this year.”

He’s injured and the decision is do I try to rehabilitate it to potentially be involved in the end of the Six Nations?

He can go one way or the other, and that gives him a clear point of reference for his goal – whether it’s the end of England’s Six Nations campaign or, after the Six Nations, preparing for a big event. An end to the season that helps him stake his claim for the Lions, if that’s possible?

“In many ways, the operational route takes a lot of these ups and downs out of it.

Then he does it, he has a decent rehab time and he knows that when he plays again, his shoulder will be ready to play, and he can go hard at the end of the season.

“One thing ends at that point and he has some certainty, the other has doubts about it. Those are his problems at the moment.

It’s not my job to say, “You do it.” You sit down with a player and make the right call for them, that’s how it should be. I am very happy to support Mani’s decision. We want the players here to wish them the best.”
