Wikipedia loses court challenge against online safety law rules

Wikipedia has lost the challenge of its Supreme Court against the British Government on the laws of the online safety law.

The Wiki Media Nonprofit Foundation (WMF), along with an anonymous editor (BLN), sought to exempt the platform from the rules presented in March.

They argued that adaptation would force the YCL Encyclopedia Online to confirm or restrict the UK user base to confirm it.

However, in a Monday decree, Mr Justice Johnson rejected the claims and proposed ways to work in the law “without causing illegal damage to Wikipedia Operation.”

The online safety law includes regulations aimed at reducing harmful content.

Part of the by -laws classifies some sites as a category, defined by the number of monthly users of a site as well as systems through which information is shared.

Rupert Paps, for WMF, told the previous session that the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Technology, which defended the claim, had extended the bylaws.

“If Wikipedia is classified as a category and confirmation is mandatory for all users, it will” deceptive “because the contents of non -approved users are filtered,” he said.

He believes that the bylaws are mostly designed for “big profitability technology companies” such as Facebook, X and Instagram, while imposing confirmation of Wikipedia users will be their human rights abuses.

“The ministers examined the guidance of thecoming and specifically considered whether Wikipedia should be exempt from the bylaws and rejected it,” said Ivimy KC to the government.

He said they decided that Wikipedia was “essentially a suitable service to impose the tasks of category one” and how the ministers came to this choice “were not without reasonable and irrational basis.

Mr Justice Johnson, rejecting WMF and BLN claims, said his decision “to ofcom and the Foreign Minister of the Green Lights to implement a regime that significantly prevents Wikipedia.”

“Doing so means that the government must justify the imposition appropriate,” he said.

The judge also said that the decision to create Wikipedia to the one service is currently related to thecom.

If this happens, there may be a possible way for more legal action.

“The decision to be in Group One is a public law decision that can be potentially investigated due to public law error,” said Johnson’s judiciary.
