Companies have to work without their own IT system, the British Cyber Security Chief has warned of an increase in the number of hacks.
“Every organization” should be prepared for a possible attack, including planning for non -technology, “said Richard Horn, executive director of the National Cyber Security Center.
The warning comes amid the sharp increase in the number of “national” cyber attacks and the hacks that have reduced M&S and Jaguar Land Rover and release them for weeks without key systems.
“From local coffee shops to provincial national crisis infrastructure providers, each organization must understand its exposure, build its defense, and have a plan to continue their work without its information technology (and rebuild it),” Horn wrote in the new report. The National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) – Part of GCHQ – with 204 “noticeable national” attacks in 12 months until the end of August 2025, had been 89 last year last year.
The government has now written to senior executives and leading business seats – including all FSE350 companies – the importance of the government and employers who are together to protect the British economy.
Letters signed by Ms. Kendal, Chancellor Rachel Reeves, Minister of Commerce Peter Kyle, Dan Jarus Journal and NCSC Chiefs and the National Crime Agency, call on employers to “make concrete measures” to manage cyber dangers.
“We saw the first hand that the cyber attacks on large British companies were at their forefront and at risk,” Kendal said.
“The government is ready to help, but cyber security is a matter that requires leadership from both senior executives and through the board of directors.”

“Cyber security is now the issue of national trade and resistance,” said Richar Horn, chief executive of NCSC.
He said: “With more than half of the events that appear to be nationally significant and the 50 % increase in high attacks last year, our exposure to serious impacts is growing with a worrying speed.
“The best way to defend these attacks is to make organizations hard as possible.
“This requires urgency of any business leader: doubt is a vulnerability and the future of their business depends on what they are taking today. The time of action is now.”
The company’s employers have been asked to use the Board of Resistance in the NCSC initial warning system, as recommended by the Cyber Practice Act, and use the cyberspace design to provide protection in supply chains.
NCSC has also launched a new cyber action tool to help traders alone and small firms.
