Brentford vs Liverpool live: news and lineups of Premier League teams due to Diogo Jota’s injury

Arne Slott is happy Liverpool are competing with the Premier League’s big spenders

Liverpool hopes to get back on track against Brentford and continue their championship in the Premier League.

Arne Slott’s side needed an immediate impact from substitute Diego Jota to salvage a point against Nottingham Forest, allowing Arsenal to close their gap to four points at the top. While they still have a game in hand on their rivals, one more drop could leave Liverpool vulnerable as the title race is sure to change by the end of the season.

Their Saturday afternoon business is a trip south to London to meet a Brentford side who have enjoyed an ordinary campaign so far. There was late drama for Thomas Frank’s men on Tuesday night as they held on to a stoppage-time draw against Manchester City, but it was another performance to inspire belief as they seek promotion to the top-half as the final half of the season kicks off.

Arne Slott suggests the impact of the changes shows why Liverpool don’t need to spend

Liverpool manager Arne Slott insisted the strength of options at his disposal meant the club did not need to add to his squad in the window after substitute Diogo Jota’s equalizer at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. No January transfers.

Jota scored just 22 seconds after coming off the bench – Liverpool’s fastest goal by a substitute in Premier League history – with a header from fellow substitute Kostas Tsimikas.

The Portuguese forward was one of four Liverpool forwards on the field as he canceled out Chris Wood’s opener at the City Ground, with Italy international Federico Chiesa an unused substitute.

Asked if Liverpool will have a busy January transfer window, Slott said: “I think you saw again today that I can still strengthen the team or influence the game with the substitutions I make from the bench.

And it was not the first time in this season that these players helped us. If you were looking today, I couldn’t ask for more. I told them at halftime, don’t despair.

I knew we were going to get opportunities with the options we had. “We created the following opportunities and we could have won.”

But Villa had beaten Arsenal at Villa Park earlier in the campaign and were again the better side, eventually getting their reward with Bailly’s low strike under David Raya in the 84th minute. When Ollie Watkins added a second and the full-time whistle blew, the stadium was almost empty. Everyone silently understood the cost: Manchester City had beaten Luton 5-0 the previous day and their momentum was unstoppable.
